Imerovigli, The Balcony Of Santorini
At the highest spot of the caldera about 3 km out of Fira, lies Imerovigli, an enchanting destination that is also one of the best known holiday resorts in Santorini.
You can use the asphalt road to drive here or walk the old trail that joins Imerovigli with the areas of Firostefani and Fira. This place that is also frequently visited by “first class visitors” is more quiet in contrast with other parts of the island and perfect for those who enjoy the peace and serenity.
You can admire the traditional cave houses and the luxurious hotels that literally hang on the edge of the cliffs, offering a truly stunning view to the volcano, all of the caldera and the dominant rock of Skaros, justly giving Imerovigli its nickname, “the balcony of Santorini”. All around the area you can come across numerous Cycladic whitewashed, blue-domed churches and chapels, such as the one of Panayia Malteza (Our Lady of Malta) that was named after an icon that was found at sea near Malta during a captain’s journey and was brought to Imerovigli where the church was built.
At the end of the village and high up on the way to Oia lies the beautiful church of Profitis Ilias and at the start of the trail to the rock of Skaros stands the church of Saint George as well as the impressive chapel of Panayia Theoskepasti (Our Lady the Godshrouded) that’s built on the edge of a rock in front of Skaros. All three are some of many locations in Imerovigli that are available for you to spend hours of photo shooting and of course admire the majestic panoramic view as well as enjoy the island’s trademark, the amazing Santorinian sunset. There are also lots of restaurants, cafes, taverns, mini markets and vehicle rental agencies around the area, ready to meet your needs.
