Ayios Dimitrios The Myrovlytis
Today, St. Demetrius the Myrrh-streamer is commemorated. He was born in an aristocratic family of Thessaloniki. At the age of 22 he was already a tribuni militum (senior officer) of the Roman army. When it became known that he has become a Christian he was thrown in jail and later on he was killed. In the icons he is depicted as a Roman officer, seated on a red horse. He was given the name “Myrovlytis” (the “Myrrh -streamer”) as, from his tomb, liquid and strong scented myrrh was emitted. Today, at the church of Ayios Dimitrios at Messaria, after the morning Holly Mass, the procession of the holly icon accompanied by the philharmonic of MSCEO will take place. Later, a great feast will follow with traditional, handmade delicacies and fine local wine. The always hospitable locals will be delighted to spoil all visitors and celebrate together with them!
